Call to artist!!!

Artworks on Main is looking for 200 pieces of art priced under $200 for our August 13th Monthly Art Walk featuring the art of Rogelio Calvo. This will give patrons an opportunity to purchase original fine art at a lower price point, deemed more 'reasonable' by most patrons.

Artists, consider some work that you have had stored for a while and you would like to see it sold. One artist said that she is going to use this as an opportunity to revisit older pieces and consider their composition, color and style for future use. Another paper based artist is considering taking some of her works and cutting them down to make smaller works! This maybe an opportunity to experiment with a new media, rework into mixed media or theme!

Standard showing requirements are not necessary for display. Paper based works need to be protected by matting or board and wrapped in plastic. Artist are not required to be at the gallery for the reception but it would be nice for patrons to be able to talk to the artist! The gallery is offering a reduce commission split to benefit the artist! Submission to this show does not assume the art will be displayed in the main gallery. Artist assume all responsibility for drop off, pick up and condition of their work.

Artworks would like to have the pieces to the gallery by Friday, Aug. 6th. Call 704-664-2414 for further details.

We have two upcoming opportunities for you to be able to market lower priced art at Artworks on Main. One will be an ongoing display and the other a special event.

As you are aware, the current economic slump has significantly refused the ability of most people to purchase original fine art in the price range currently offered in the 'main' gallery of Artworks on Main. It is encouraging however, that periodically we still do sell a 'main-gallery' piece. In an effort to generate increased income for our artist community and Artworks, we have decided to offer a lower priced range of artwork, to be displayed in the art supply retail store. The number of pieces will be somewhat limited due to space. The price range we are considering is $250 and under. Due to the lower price range, the gallery commission will be reduced. We are seeking the first representation of art work from our current artist. We will hold this priority until July 8th, then it will open to other artist in the area.

Secondly, At the artwalk on Friday August 13th we will have a promotion centered around artwork $199 and under. We will call this '200 under $200' and have at least 200 pieces on display. We will have our featured artist in the main gallery and '200 under $200' will be displayed in the back. Once again commissions will be reduced for these items.

Open Life Drawing Sessions

This monitored open studio is for those who like to work from the model. Students choose their own mediums. An experienced monitor is in charge of set-ups and poses. Beginners and professionals are invited.

**Adults only, please. Those High School students working on their portfolio may attend with written permission from their parents or guardian.

Watercolor – A Fanciful Summer

This Watercolor Class will be taught in the traditional way whereby the paper texture itself becomes an integral part of the finished painting. Artworks on Main has a new instructor added to its roster, Sandra Siepert. All levels of experience are invited to join her on Mondays through the summer.

Portrait In Oil with Gordon C James

Mr. James has been running this class for the past year and now has a strong “fan” base! Many of his students have taken this class more than once because of the charisma, the creative aura, of this instructor. He is a teacher’s teacher and NC art teachers use his classes to fulfill needed CEU credits for certification. These summer classes are shorter so that you can get to the beach quicker! Ages: teen thru adult

Concept Design for Video Games

This class will be challenging to those who dare!! Students will be creating video games from start to finish using characters, creatures, and environment. Having some drawing experience will be helpful in this fun, exciting class! Ages: 12-20

Finish Those Paintings

So you have a closet filled with unfinished paintings and you’re not about to throw them away! So finish them under the guidance of well-known artist/instructor, Paul Keysar. These are 3-hour drop-in classes, so just show up with your paintings and painting materials.

Ages: teen thru adult

Dates and Times: Wednesday, June 16th from 6:00 to 9:00; Monday, June 21st from 10:00 to 1:00; and Wednesday, July 7th from 6:00 to 9:00. Instructor: Paul Keysar

Pottery – All Skill Level Class

Do you want to learn how to throw your own pottery? Years ago did you take a class and want to try again? Have you developed skill and just need help with finesse?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then you should take this class! Instructor Julie Payne is a skilled ceramics instructor with the ability to work with all skill levels. Julie is a former production potter in Seagrove, NC, before moving to Mooresville, NC, in 2003 where she continues to work from her home studio, teaching at Mitchell Community College and now at Artworks on Main! Intermediate Painting

Students will be encouraged to expand their focus. They will need to feel comfortable with the basics of acrylic and/or oil painting to enable them to create at the next level. The size of the paintings (miniature to very large) as well as the subject matter (landscape, still life, live models) will be explored to get the creative juices flowing!

Drawing Demystified

Gordon C. James is an award-winning fine artist and illustrator. His work has been featured in International Artist Magazine and he has several children’s books to his credit. This class will break the process of drawing down into simple and manageable pieces so that you can learn to draw what you see. Working in a variety of media, including graphic, charcoal, and ink, students will learn how to use line, space, scale, and texture in order to develop accurate and exciting drawings. Students who have taken this course have markedly improved their drawing skills. Join the next session of this class to improve yours! Ages: teen thru adult

Introduction to Oil

Always wanted to try oil painting, but not sure where to start? Have some experience with oils, but want to learn more? Please join us as we take an in-depth look at each stage of completing an oil painting. Paul Keysar will demonstrate how to apply paints to the palette, prepare and tone the canvas, understand what makes a good composition, and paint in several stages to complete your work of art. Drawing 101

Choose your own medium for this drawing class. Select from crayon, color pencil, pencil, charcoal, watercolor pencils, or pastels to discover and develop basic techniques to draw what you see. Learn to use lines, shading, contouring, and other fundamentals under the guidance of Lino Azevedo. This is a serious class taught with a sense of humor!

Acrylic Abstract Painting

This creative and energizing class will cover a different theme each week. Instructor, Lee Ann Harrison, will discuss how to paint large scale; how to find your inspiration, and exploring creativity and techniques in abstract painting. She will guide the student through approaches to composition, to the mixed media genre, demonstrate and discuss brushstrokes and texture, while sparking the imagination by painting to poetry and music. Lots of individual attention! This is a fun, energetic class designed for all skill levels. Acrylic medium preferred, but open to other mediums. Material Supply List provided upon enrollment.

‘Rumors’ Acrylic Painting Workshop

This is not your run of the mill workshop. Each artist will be working on a 24 x 36 canvas under the guidance of Lee Ann Harrison. She will use many techniques to inspire participants to create unusual abstract pieces of art. Bring a bottle of wine, materials and willingness to work with your fellow artist. Throwing

Beginning pottery

Learning the basics of how to throw a vessel, the general properties of clay and glazing. Class fee includes a bag of clay, glaze materials and use of kiln. Session begins every 4 weeks. Tuesdays 1-3:30

Pottery 101

After you learn to basics of throwing advancing to this class is the next step to throwing a more refined vessel. Class fee includes a bag of clay, glaze materials and use of kiln. Tuesdays 5:15-7:45

Intermediate Pottery

Furthering you exploration of a vessel and the wheel this class will take your skills to greater heights. Creating forms that you might never thought possible! Wednesdays 6-8:30

Hand Building

Hand Building 101

In this class you will learn the properties of clay, how to manipulate the clay by using three basic hand building techniques; pinch, coil and slab and how to glaze your pieces. The instructor will give group and individual instruction. Fee includes four (4) 2 hour sessions and material fees. Mondays 10am-Noon.

Hand Building 102 & 103

In this class you will continue your exploration into the depth that hand building offers. Taking more time with finesse and technique with each individual piece the instructor will give group and individual instruction. Students are expected to sketch their ideas. Fee includes four (4) 2 hour sessions and material fees. Fridays 10am– Noon.

Class Fee $145 All sessions are ongoing, join at any time!

A night of painting....

This evening will be a creative, free flowing exercise to produce an abstract work of art. The fee includes guidance and canvas. All you need to bring is brushes, paints and any mixed media embellishment that you may want to use.
As always our Friday night painting sessions are filled with laughter, smiles, education, friendship and ART!!!
Creativity flows durning these sessions, so don't be surprised if you feel the urge to go home and continue painting on the 'Artists High' you just experienced!

Use and everyday object as a subject for your next project. Or use an everyday object as your next project. Be it rubberbands, paper clips, coffee cups or even toilet paper try it. Making an everyday object a work of art is challenging and can be very rewarding.

We are having some difficulty with our website right now but keep checking back to see our list of summer classes. We are working very hard with our instructors to get our fall classes scheduled so that each and every one of you can plan to take some classes. Taking classes is fun and rewarding. If you are worried about taking classes don't be...our instructors guide you. Not demand that you do it 'their' way. Friendships are made. As we all know surrounding your self with other creative people is the best way to keep your own juices flowing!

Today Creative Challenge is...

Brushes.

The brush is a tool. We use brushes to keep our hair smooth. We use brushes to clean with. We use brushes to apply paints to a variety of surfaces. Is there a different brush you can use in your work? Or how about the lack of a brush? Try cutting a brush to give a different look. How about a brush as a subject matter? What brush is your favorite?
Get out those brushes and look at the in a different way. Look at the simple tool with respect.

Yes rice the grain, that comes in so many colors. It can take on different spices. Cultures all over the world eat rice.

If you have not seen our website lately check it out. NEW at Artworks on Main is Pottery classes! We are offering 3 classes for all skill levels! We are also offering Intro to Oil, Abstracts in Acrylic, Fashion Design and Illustration, Intermediate Acrylic, Watercolor in Spring.
Also if you have a teenager that is interested in Art School then the Portfolio Prep class. This class will give your child a professional look at their Portfolio.

Two events coming this spring are 'Taste of Wine' to benefit Food for Friends a community outreach program of St. Patrick's Episcopal Church happening Friday May 7th 6-9pm. Purchase a wine glass and visit businesses in DoMo to fill your glass and sample yummy food! More details to follow just mark your schedule!

Second, Artworks on Main will sponsor 'Arts, Eats and Beats' in DoMo. In the park across from the Mooresville Art Guild artist will have spaces to sell their work. May 22nd and 23rd from 10-5pm. Details are in the works.

February Gallery Crawl
Artworks on Main will feature artists Carlleena Person for February 12th, 2010 gallery crawl. Meet Carlleena from 6-9pm. Carlleena was born in New Jersey and spent her teenage years in North Carolina. I am a student of life as well as an alumni of North Carolina State University in which I obtained my BA in Liberal Arts.

Carlleena says this about her self;
"I label myself “self-taught” but my current teachers or “artist inspirations” are painters, writers and musicians such as Pollock, Kerouac, Coltrane, Jacob Lawrence, Langston Hughes, Hendrix and many others. Paint flows through my blood. Art is my soul. As I grow as an artist, I am constantly redefining my voice. The spirit of humanity inspires what comes through on the canvas. What I feel when I paint is what I hope you feel when you are lost in my abstract images of color and lines."

Get ready for the art of Karen Peppers as our featured artist for the December Gallery Crawl! The gallery will come alive on December 11th 6-9pm.Karen Peppers

Originally from Virginia, Karen Peppers was raised in Charlotte, NC. Her inspirations for the arts began at an early age. Community programs and self discipline has led her to a professional career as a visual artist.

Using a pallet of bold acrylic color, butterflies, women and abstract images are created on canvas to interpret personality, freedom and emotion. Heavy contrast is used to suggest the intensity of the statement of each piece. The Inspiration comes from life experiences and goals within.

Karen’s work is represented by galleries located in North and South Carolina and is owned by residential and commercial clients. Her purpose is to inspire and contribute for the better “Well being”.

Of course, Billy Jones will be offering his wonderful voice and music for our entertainment!

November's Gallery Crawl was something special! Here is Billy Jones entertaining everyone with his wonderful talent. Behind him you see the art of Joyce Wynes and Joe Thompson.

Guests were educated by the talented Eva Rizzardi, November's featured artists. Eva kindly explained the difficult and tedious process of the many types of printmaking she practices. Blending several techniques is both rewarding and a challenge for her. A native of Italy, Eva completed her studies in southern Switzerland. She has been greatly influenced by her travels and experiences. Although well traveled Eva has resided in Charlotte, NC since 1982. Stop by the gallery to experience Eva's works!

Let's not forget that our next gallery crawl is going to take place on December 11th, 2009 from 6-9pm.
